LAW EVENTS
National Moot Court Competition
- Students of the host institution will NOT be allowed to participate.
- Maximum number of entries allowed for this competition is 20. (The set cap can be
increased/decreased as per circumstances and, decision of the Organizing Committee (OC) shall
be final. OC is not liable under any circumstances to convey the change in structure to any team,
personally. If any change or alteration is made, the same will be put in for public notice.) - Participants registering for the Moot court competition will not be allowed to take part in the Client
Counselling and vice versa, for the rest of the events multiple participations are permitted.
DRESS CODE
- For boys: White shirt, black trousers, black tie, black coat, black formal shoes.
- For girls: White salwar kurta, white shirt, black trousers, black coat, black shoes. (NO JEGGINGS)
(The participants shall strictly adhere to the prescribed dress code. Improper observation of the
above mentioned dress code will attract penalty in scoring of the event.)
TEAM COMPOSITION
- Only ONE TEAM is allowed per institution.
Each team shall consist of maximum 3 members (2 mooters and 1 researcher) or (2 mooters)
Once the competition commences, the team composition cannot be altered. However, under
certain circumstances if any alteration is necessitated, it should be brought in notice of the OC.Any alteration of the names of the team members is to be informed in writing, to that effect,
addressed to the OC and Director, PUSSGRC, Hoshiarpur by the Dean/ Director/ HOD of the
institution, of the team requesting such alteration. However any such alteration shall be
permitted only once.
Inability of any team member to participate in accordance with the rules of this Competition shall
lead to immediate disqualification.
Each participating team has to prepare memorial for both the sides i.e. PROSECUTION and
DEFENSE.
Teams have to prepare a total of 5 hard copies of memorials of each side.
LANGUAGE
- Language of the competition is English and this is to be strictly adhered to, throughout the event.
MEMORIALS
- Each participating team has to prepare a memorial for both sides i.e. PROSECUTION and DEFENSE.
- Teams have to prepare a total of 5 hard copies of memorials of each side.
- The cover page of the memorial sent, for both the soft and printed copies, shall clearly mention the word “P” for a memorial on behalf of the Prosecution, and the word “D” for memorials on behalf of the Defendant side, followed by the team code for both the instances, such being inscribed on top right-hand corner of the cover page of the memorial. For example, if the team has been assigned a code of 88, the memorials sent by such team shall have “P88” and “D88” clearly marked on the top right-hand corner of the cover page of the respective memorials.
- The teams shall not disclose the identity of their institution anywhere on their memorial. Violation of this rule shall result in immediate disqualification.
- The memorials have to be submitted on A4 size paper and must contain the following sections in the order stated below:

- PRAYER
- The memorials must be printed in Times New Roman font with 12 font size and with 1.5 line spacing. The footnoting must be in Times New Roman font with 10 font size and with 1.0 line spacing. The memorial should have a margin measuring one inch on all sides of each page. To conserve paper, teams may print their memorials on both sides of the A4 sheet and submit accordingly.
- The arguments advanced section should not exceed 20 pages.
- Memorials as a whole should not exceed 35 pages excluding the cover page.
- The numbering should be on the bottom-right corner of each page.
- Cover page of the Prosecution memorial shall be printed on A4 size paper of Blue Color
- Cover page of Defendant`s memorial shall be printed on A4 size paper of Red Color.
- The participants shall not use plastic supplements such as NO SPIRAL BINDING is allowed and
- NO PLASTIC COVER SHEETS are to be added.
- The participants have to tie the memorial with the File Thread. Non-observance of this rule would result in penalty & deduction of marks.
- The teams are to strictly adhere to the citation method of the 21st edition of Harvard Bluebook for Citation throughout the memorial.
- The maximum scores for the memorials shall be 100 marks. The memorials shall be evaluated on the following criteria:
Knowledge of law and facts 30 Marks
Proper and Articulate analysis 30 Marks
Extent and Use of Research 20 Marks
Grammar style 10 Marks
Clarity and Organization 10 Marks

- For every 4 hours of delay in soft copies of memorial 2 marks will be deducted.
- Teams are requested to send 2 hard copies [the envelope should the Team Code written on it] of each side (Prosecution & Defense) by 1st February, 2024, addressed to:

- 3 hard copies are to be submitted on the date of commencement of the competition.
- The content matter of the hard copies is expected to be same as that of the previously sent soft copies. Any changes found would result in penalty for the concerned teams.
COMPETITION FORMAT:
TIME SLOTS
- Preliminary Round I- 30 minutes per team
- Preliminary Round II- 30 minutes per team
- Semi Final- 45 minutes per team
- Final- 60 minutes per team
(The above mentioned time includes time for Rebuttal and Sur-Rebuttal)
- Any team exceeding time limit shall be penalized with deduction of 1mark for every 2 minutes.
- The oral arguments shall be confined to the issues raised and presented in the memorial.
- The researcher shall be present with the speakers during the oral rounds.
- Passing of notes to the speaker by teammates is allowed.
PRELIMINARY ROUNDS I & II
- To determine the order of participation in the preliminary round, all the registered and present teams shall participate in a draw of lots, which shall take place on the 15th Feb 2024, immediately after the Inauguration, followed by exchange of memorials and orientation of the teams.
- No two teams shall face each other more than once in the Preliminary Rounds. In determining the final score at the end of the preliminary rounds, the score of the memorials will be added.
SEMI-FINALS & FINAL ROUND
- The top four scoring teams from the Prelims will be selected for Semi-Finals. The semi-finals will begin on 16th February, 2024. The scores of memorials will be considered in every round of the event and will be added in the final cumulative score which will decide the winners of each round.
- The two top scoring teams in semifinals will be selected for the final round which will be conducted on the same day. Winners will be awarded during the Valediction to be held on 17th February, 2024.
TIE BREAKING RULES
In case of tie between two teams in any rounds, memorial scores will be taken into consideration to break the tie. In case the tie still subsists, the oral score of the best speaker of each team will be considered to break the tie. If the tie continues, the oral score of the second speaker of each team will be considered to break the tie.
SCORING
The maximum score per speaker per round is 100 marks which are categorized as follows:
Knowledge of Law 20 Marks
Application of Law Facts 20 marks
Ingenuity & Ability to Answer 20 marks
Poise, Courtesy & Demeanor 20 marks
Time Management 10 marks
Organization 10 marks
SCOUTING
During the prelims, no audience will be allowed to watch the rounds. Only the respective team members and the students appointed by the organizers are to be present in the court room along with the respective judges. Scouting is strictly prohibited which will result in immediate disqualification from the event.
ANONYMITY
All the team members must refrain from disclosing the identity of their institutions at any time and in any manner during the entire competition. Non-compliance with this rule shall result in immediate disqualification.
FINAL DECISIONS
The decisions of the judges with respect to the rounds of competition shall be final and binding. For other issues, the decision of the OC shall be final.

SSG NATIONAL CLIENT COUNSELING COMPETITION
ELIGIBILITY
The Competition is open for students pursuing three / five year LL.B./BALLB Degree Course from recognized Law College/University in India, subject to fulfillment of the registration formalities.
Teams from host institute are NOT allowed.
Maximum 2 teams from a single institution can register for this competition.
Participants registering for Client Counseling will not be allowed to take part in Moot Court and vice versa.
TEAM COMPOSITION
Each team shall consist of two members (Counsel 1 & Counsel 2). All participants are mandatorily required to carry their University/College ID Cards during the competition.
DRESS CODE (Formals)
Female: White salwar kurta or White Shirt, Black Trouser, Black Tie, Black Blazer, Black Shoes.
Male: White Shirt and Black Trouser; Black Tie, Black Blazer and Black Shoes

CRITERION 1: ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP
The lawyers should establish the beginning of an effective professional relationship and working atmosphere. At an appropriate point, they should orient the client to the special nature of the relationship (confidentiality, fees, mutual obligations and rights, duration and plan of interview, methods of contact, etc.) in a courteous, sensitive and professional manner.
CRITERION 2: OBTAINING INFORMATION
The lawyers should elicit relevant information about the problem from the client. “Relevant information” may include matters that affect the client considerably but are not “legally” relevant. They should develop a reasonably complete and reliable description of the problem and reflect this understanding to the client.
CRITERION 3: LEARNING THE CLIENT’S GOALS, EXPECTATIONS AND NEEDS
The lawyers should learn the client’s goals and initial expectations and, after input from the client, modify or restate them as necessary, giving attention in doing so to the emotional aspects of the problems.
CRITERION 4: PROBLEM ANALYSIS
The lawyers should analyze the client’s problem with creativity and from both legal and non- legal perspectives and should convey a clear and useful formulation of the problem to the client.
CRITERION 5: LEGAL ANALYSIS AND GIVING ADVICE
Legal analysis and the consequent legal advice given should be both accurate and appropriate to the situation and its context. If appropriate, the lawyers should give pertinent and relevant non- legal advice.
CRITERION 6: DEVELOPING REASONED COURSES OF ACTION
The lawyers consistently with the analysis of the client’s problem should develop a set of potentially effective and feasible options, both legal and non-legal.
CRITERION 7: ASSISTING THE CLIENT TO MAKE AN INFORMED CHOICE
The lawyers should develop an appropriate balance in dealing with the legal and emotional needs of the client. They should assist the client in his or her understanding of problems and solutions and in making an informed choice, taking potential legal, economic, social and psychological consequences into account.
CRITERION 8: EFFECTIVELY CONCLUDING THE INTERVIEW
The lawyers should conclude the interview skillfully and leave the client with:
a feeling of reasonable confidence and understanding;
appropriate reassurance; and
a clear sense of specific expectations and mutual obligations to follow.
CRITERION 9: TEAMWORK
The lawyers, as collaborating counselors should work together as a team with flexibility and an appropriate balance of participation.
CRITERION 10: POST INTERVIEW REFLECTION PERIOD
During the post-interview reflection, the lawyers should give evidence of:
Recognizing their own and the client’s emotional considerations;
Acknowledging the strengths and limitations of their interviewing and counseling skills;
Handling the substantive aspects of the client’s problems (both legal and non-legal);
Identifying the ethical or moral issues and the proper handling of them; and
Providing for an effective follow up.
JUDGMENT CRITERIA:
Marking scheme shall comprise of 100 marks per counsel which shall be distributed as follows:

NOTE:
Evaluation done by the Judges of each round shall be final and binding on all the teams.
The organizers reserve the right to modify the rules of the competition at any point of time.
In case of a tie, team scoring more marks in ability to provide legal solution’ category will qualify for the next round.
ROUNDS
Time-Slots:
Preliminary Round (I & II): 30 minutes each
Semi-Final Round : 40 minutes
Final Round : 50 minutes
Note: The participating teams required to adhere to the time limit, extension of time shall be penalized.
However, the above prescribed time is subject to change on discretion of judges.
The Consultation Period (Interview Period):
The first 20 minutes in the Preliminary Round, 30 minutes in Semi-Final round and 40 minutes in Final Round are devoted for consultation with the client during which lawyers are expected to
elicit the relevant information, outline the problem and propose a solution or other means of resolving the problem. (Further information is contained in the Judging Standards for the Client Counseling Competition) During the consultation and post- consultation, the teams may use books, notes but no electronic media is to be used.
Post Consultation Period (Post Interview Period)
The remaining time from the total time as specified above will be for post-Consultation period i.e. the last 10 minutes in all the respective rounds are devoted for post consultation. During the post-consultation period, the students may talk to each other loudly enough to be overheard by the judges.
The concept behind the post-consultation period is to summarize the interview, indicate the scope of the legal work to be undertaken, and state the legal issues that should be researched. Explanation of the position or attitude taken by the client students may be useful. Judges may question the teams during the post consultation period.
SUBJECTS ENCOMPASSED
All the Problems shall be based on either of the subjects, solely or in combination therewith:
- Contract Law
- Criminal Laws
- Law of Torts
- Personal laws
- Constitutional Law
- Consumer Laws
- Labour Laws
Note: The participants are expected to have knowledge of other ancillary laws and procedures.
NOTE
No written submission is required.
The results will be prepared on merit basis throughout the competition.
Language of the competition shall be English.
Allotment of client to each team shall be by drawing of lots before each round.
During the consultation and post-consultation, the team may use books, notes, and other materials. However NO ELECTRONIC MODES OF INFORMATION CAN BE USED OR ACCESSED DURING THE COMPETITION (including all electronic items like Laptops, Tablets, Cell Phones, smart watches etc.)
The team may also use office props to setup an Office structure. However, none of them will be provided by the Host Department.
NON-COMPLIANCE WITH THE RULES OF THE COMPETITION
The participants are required to comply with the rules formulated by the Organizing Committee at all times during the competition. In case of any non- compliance with the rules of OC penalty may be imposed by deduction of marks and the teams may also be disqualified.
GROUNDS FOR DISQUALIFICATION
Misconduct, behavioral or otherwise.
Any discussion with client before competition.
Cheating or using unfair means.
Intimidating clients or OC in any manner.
ANONYMITY
Each team will be provided with a unique code upon registration. The identity of the teams shall not be disclosed at any stage; such disclosure shall invite penalties including disqualification. THE DECISION FOR THE SAME SHALL BE AT THE DISCRETION OF THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE.

Any dispute about the competition shall be referred to the OC within 30 minutes of the declaration of the result

SSG NATIONAL JUDGMENT WRITING COMPETITION
ELIGIBILITY
The participant should be currently pursuing their Bachelor’s Degree in law i.e. 3-Year LL.B. course or 5-Year BA LL.B. course from any recognized institute.
Participants from the host college are also ALLOWED.

FORMAT OF THE JUDGMENT
A cover page stating the name of the competition, the unique code provided upon registration, with the signatures of each student author. The Judgment Writing shall begin on the next page.
The first page of Judgment must contain Team Code, Name of the Court, Title, and Number of the Case, Date of Delivery of Judgment, and Nature of the Case (Civil/Criminal/Writ). Admissibility/Maintainability of Petitions/Suits/Appeal, History and Procedural History of the Petition/Suit/Appeal; Issues and Points for Determination; Framing Specific Questions for determination; Reference to Precedents, Other Sources (both authoritative and persuasive); Decision on issues framed or points formulated Decretal/Operative Part.
SUBMISSION
- There is only one round of 3 hours.
- This shall be an On the Spot judgment writing competition.
- The problem shall be provided at the beginning of the competition, first 90 minutes will be allotted for reading and research work and rest of the 90 minutes for writing the judgment.
- The judgment shall be handwritten in English only. Word limit – maximum 2500 words.
Use of any electronic gadgets (except smart watches) is permitted for first 60 minutes only.
Bare Acts should be brought by team itself.
ANONYMITY
Each team will be provided with a unique code upon registration. The identity of the teams shall not be disclosed at any stage; such disclosure shall invite penalties including disqualification. THE DECISION FOR THE SAME SHALL BE AT THE DISCRETION OF THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE.
